Brandon Weis hiked 7,000 miles in a single calendar year, and now he’s visiting USCL to tell you all about his hiking adventures on Wednesday, July 24th at 6:00 p.m. in USCL’s large meeting room. Brandon, also the author of This Is Gonna Hurt, will share the triumphs and the tolls of what it takes to hike the Appalachian Trail, The Pacific Crest Trail, The Arizona Trail, and The Continental Divide Trail in one year; known as the Calendar Triple Crown. More people have walked on the moon than have completed this amazing feat! No registration is required for this program and all ages are invited to attend. Do you think you have what it takes to win The Amazing Library Race? All ages are invited to sign up and find out! On Saturday, July 20th gather your team of three to six people (You must have at least one adult) and meet at 9:45 in USCL’s back yard to begin a race around town where you will be asked to complete challenges and puzzles. When you have completed all the tasks, race back to the library. If you are the first team to complete all your tasks successfully, you will win four tickets to The Toledo Zoo! There’s no better way to celebrate summer than a cookout with friends. USCL invites you to join us on July 25th at 5:30 for our barbecue and picnic. We’ll start the event with barbecue enthusiast, Jevon Cheney, who will share his tips on grilling and smoking meat. He’ll discuss what cuts of meat are best, take all your cookout questions, and then begin the picnic with some pulled pork right from the smoker. We encourage everyone attending to bring their own drinks and a side dish or dessert to share. So mark your calendar and we’ll see you in the backyard! Join Cheryl on Monday, July 22nd at noon in USCL's large meeting room for Lunch Bunch, where the community meets to share a meal. This month’s theme is blueberries or sweet corn. What books can you discover this month at our Storywalk locations? At our Storywalk at Stepping Stones, you’ll be reading The Busy Tree. With a rhyming text that describes a tree’s activities from its roots to its branches, this book introduces young readers to the amazing activities that go on in a tree. Acorns nibbled by chipmunks, a spider spinning a web, leaves “breathing out air for all to breathe in”—everything adds up to a “busy tree” for all to “come and see.” Ready to read and solve a mystery? Visit our Downtown Coded Storywalk and be sure to write down the code letter located at each stop. This month, read The Birthday Pet. It’s Danny's birthday and his folks said he could get any kind of animal he wanted for a pet. Danny thought it over and decided all he ever wanted was a turtle. But instead, his family gets him a dog, a kitten, a rat, and a bird. Will he ever get the pet he hoped for? When you finish the story, you should have spelled out a special message that you can bring back to the library to receive a prize! Take a Storywalk The Summer Reading Program by The Pythian Sisters -Miss Jill 1,000 Books!
