Start off the summer right by returning to the Upper Sandusky Community Library and signing up for the 2021 Tails & Tales Summer Reading Program! It begins June 1 and runs through July 31.
If you know which program you would like to sign up for, then stop by the library to pick up a Bingo card or activity sheet. You can also sign up for the Summer Reading Program here (or use the form below) and download the Adult, Teen, and Elementary Bingo cards and Wee Read activity sheet there.
Otherwise, read on to see what the library is doing this year for the Tails & Tales Summer Reading Program!
WEE READ SUMMER READING PROGRAM
The Wee Read Summer Reading Program, intended for newborns to age 3, enables even the youngest child to share in the joy of reading. Pick up an activity sheet at the library or download one here. Caregivers may cross out one symbol for each book read to the child. Adults can bring in the completed activity to the library through July 31 to receive a free board book.
BINGO
You will have plenty of opportunities to play Bingo this summer as well, no matter your age. Snag a Bingo card for your age group and get to reading and completing activities. The Adult, Teen, and Elementary Bingo cards can be picked up at the library or downloaded from this page. Each Bingo equals one entry to win a prize of your choice. Children in elementary school will receive a one paperback book when they bring in their first completed Bingo card. Continue playing Bingo throughout the summer to earn more entries. Winners will be notified on Aug. 2, 2021.
Special thanks to the Friends of the Library, whose donation helped to purchase the gift cards and picnic basket, and to Koehler Drug for the gift basket, all of which patrons can enter to win as part of the Summer Reading Program.
TALES ABOUT SALAMANDERS AND FARM ANIMALS
The library also will be hosting a few in-person programs in June. Learn about and interact with four different Ohio salamanders with Crawford Park District Naturalist Chelsea Gottfried on June 7. Visit her in front of the library any time between 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Then visit the Harrison-Smith Park Artz Pavilion from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on June 14 to see what animals the Upper Sandusky FFA will bring for you to pet.
THE BIG EVENT
Make sure to join the library for the Big Event on June 17 at the Harrison-Smith Park band shell. The night kicks off with a special What’s Cookin’: Pack Your Picnic Basket program at 6:00 p.m. Join Cheryl Lyon as she demonstrates three different picnic recipes: Chicken Salad Sandwiches, Wacky Bean Salad, and Strawberry Angel Food Cake Dessert. Make sure to stay after for samples of the dishes.
Join library staff immediately after for a few rounds of Jeopardy! The game will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature categories related to the Tails & Tails theme.
DIGITAL ESCAPE ROOM
Think you have what it takes to solve Miss Lisa's Digital Escape Room? Enter if you dare! Finish the escape room and tell the very last answer to a staff member at the desk to receive a prize - and don't forget to mark it off your Bingo card.
WEEKLY GUESSING GAME
How many items do you think are in the jar? Take a guess - it also fills in a spot on the Bingo card! A winner will be announced each week.
STORYWALK®: CODED TALES
For June and July, Miss Jill has added a special twist for the Tails & Tales Summer Reading Program. The book for this month is The Night Before the New Pet by Natasha Wing and illustrated by Amy Wummer. Before you begin your walk, stop by the library’s front desk and pick up a Coded Tales worksheet. As you walk from business to business, each page will be marked with a letter that should be written on the worksheet. When you finish the story, you will have spelled out a special message that you can return to the library to receive a special prize. The StoryWalk®:Coded Tales begins at the library's front door.
